The Petrochromis sp. 'Moshi Yellow' is a vibrant cichlid species endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Renowned for their striking yellow coloration, these fish are a captivating addition for experienced aquarists.
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Males can reach up to 18 cm (7 inches) in length, with females being slightly smaller.
Coloration: Both males and females exhibit a bright yellow hue, making them stand out in any aquarium setting.
Natural Habitat:
In the wild, Petrochromis sp. 'Moshi Yellow' inhabit rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika, where they graze on algae and biofilm.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Size: A minimum of 600 liters (approximately 160 gallons) is recommended to accommodate their active nature and territorial behavior.
Water Parameters:
Diet: Primarily herbivorous; a diet rich in spirulina-based flake food supplemented with fresh green vegetables such as romaine lettuce and spinach is ideal.
Behavior and Compatibility:
Petrochromis sp. 'Moshi Yellow' are known for their territorial and sometimes aggressive behavior, especially males during breeding periods. It's advisable to keep them in species-only tanks or with other Petrochromis species. Some aquarists have had success keeping them with smaller, younger Petrochromis or Tropheus species; however, caution is advised due to their voracious appetite, which can lead to overfeeding and potential health issues like bloat in tank mates.
Breeding:
Males are quite territorial and are aggressive in their attempts to coax females to spawn. They never seem to tire of this either—males want to spawn every minute of the day. This fish should never be kept in 1:1 ratios. One male to three or four females is an ideal ratio, but keep in mind that the only correct way to keep this species in captivity is in a group of ten or more individuals. The most difficult challenge to breeding Petrochromis is bringing the females into spawning condition.
Special Considerations:
Due to their size, dietary needs, and territorial nature, Petrochromis sp. 'Moshi Yellow' are best suited for experienced aquarists prepared to meet their specific care requirements. Ensuring ample space, proper diet, and suitable tank mates is crucial for their well-being.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water. This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
Q: When can I expect my order to be ship?
