The Albino Rubescens Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara rubescens), commonly known as the Albino Ruby Red Peacock, is a selectively bred variant of the Ruby Red Peacock Cichlid. This albino morph is distinguished by its pale body coloration and red eyes, resulting from a genetic mutation that inhibits normal pigmentation.

Origin and Lineage:

  • Ruby Red Peacock Cichlid: The Ruby Red Peacock is not a hybrid but has been line-bred from the Maleri Island race of Aulonocara sp. Stuartgranti Maleri. It was named "Rubescens" after Peter Rubin, who first imported this fish from Germany.

  • Albino Variant: The albino form of the Ruby Red Peacock may or may not be a hybrid.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Males typically reach up to 5 inches (12.7 cm) in length, while females are slightly smaller.

  • Coloration: Males exhibit a pale body with red or pink hues and red eyes, characteristic of albinism. Females display more subdued coloration.

Behavior and Temperament:

  • Temperament: Relatively peaceful compared to other African cichlids but can exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods.

  • Compatibility: Best housed with similarly sized and tempered cichlids; avoid pairing with overly aggressive species.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons (208 liters) is recommended to accommodate their active nature and territorial tendencies.

  • Water Parameters: Maintain a pH between 7.5 and 8.5, with temperatures ranging from 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).

  • Environment: Provide a sandy substrate with ample rocks and caves to mimic their natural habitat and offer hiding spots.

Diet:

As omnivores, Albino Rubescens Peacock Cichlids thrive on a varied diet, including high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter. Regular dietary variety enhances their vibrant coloration and overall health.

Breeding:

These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. To encourage breeding, maintain optimal water conditions and provide secluded areas within the tank. Females carry fertilized eggs in their mouths until the fry are ready to swim freely.

The Albino Rubescens Peacock Cichlid's unique appearance and engaging behavior make it a standout addition for cichlid enthusiasts seeking a vibrant and dynamic aquarium inhabitant.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
