The Albino OB Peacock Cichlid is a hybrid variant of the Aulonocara genus, distinguished by its pale, albino coloration and distinctive Orange Blotch (OB) patterns. These eye-catching fish are highly sought after by aquarists for their unique appearance and active behavior.

Key Features:

  • Coloration: The Albino OB Peacock displays a light, pale body with irregular blotches of orange, pink, or red. Its red eyes, a hallmark of the albino gene, add to its striking appearance.
  • Size: Adults typically grow to 5-6 inches.
  • Temperament: Albino OB Peacocks are semi-aggressive and best kept with other similarly sized cichlids, such as Peacocks and Haps. They are less compatible with overly aggressive Mbuna species.

Natural Lineage:

Although hybrids like the Albino OB are not found in the wild, their genetic roots trace back to Lake Malawi's cichlids. Selective breeding has introduced the OB pattern (originally from Mbuna) into the Peacock lineage, combined with the recessive albino gene.

Care and Tank Requirements:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons for a small group.
  • Environment: Sandy substrate, rocks, and caves to mimic their natural Lake Malawi habitat and provide hiding spots.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)
    • pH: 7.5–8.6
  • Diet: Omnivorous – high-quality cichlid pellets, algae-based foods, and occasional live/frozen treats like brine shrimp or bloodworms.

Behavior:

Albino OB Peacocks are active swimmers with a tendency to establish territories. Males can be territorial, especially during breeding, so a balanced ratio of one male to multiple females is recommended to reduce aggression.

Breeding:

Albino OB Peacocks are maternal mouthbrooders:

  1. Males attract females by creating a burrow or displaying their vibrant colors.
  2. After fertilization, females incubate the eggs in their mouths for 2–3 weeks until the fry are ready to swim freely.
  3. Fry thrive on crushed flakes or specialized fry food.

At Cichlid World Tank, we celebrate the beauty and diversity of cichlids like the Albino OB Peacock. Whether you're new to cichlids or an experienced aquarist, these stunning fish are sure to be a highlight in your aquarium.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
