The Red Parrot Cichlid, commonly known as the Blood Parrot Cichlid, is a hybrid freshwater fish renowned for its vibrant red-orange coloration and distinctive beak-like mouth. This species was first developed in Taiwan in the 1980s through the crossbreeding of various cichlid species, including the Midas Cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus) and the Redhead Cichlid (Paraneetroplus synspilus).
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Adult Blood Parrot Cichlids typically reach lengths of 7 to 8 inches (18 to 20 cm).
Coloration: They exhibit bright orange to red hues, with some individuals displaying yellow or gray variations. It's important to note that some fish may be artificially dyed to enhance their color, a practice that can negatively impact their health.
Body Shape: These cichlids have a rounded body with a nuchal hump and a unique mouth structure resembling a parrot's beak, which often cannot close completely due to genetic deformities.
Behavior and Temperament:
Temperament: Blood Parrot Cichlids are generally peaceful and can be shy, especially when introduced to a new environment. They can coexist with other non-aggressive fish species but may become territorial during breeding periods.
Activity Level: They are active swimmers and often interact with their environment, making them engaging pets for aquarists.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for a single Blood Parrot Cichlid, with an additional 10 gallons for each additional fish.
Water Parameters:
Tank Setup: Provide a fine gravel or sandy substrate, along with decorations like driftwood, clay pots, and hardy plants such as Java Fern and Anubias to create hiding spots and reduce stress.
Filtration: Use a reliable filtration system, as Blood Parrot Cichlids produce significant waste. Regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.
Diet:
Blood Parrot Cichlids are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet. High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vegetables such as peas or spinach. This variety ensures they receive essential nutrients for optimal health and coloration.
Breeding:
Breeding Blood Parrot Cichlids can be challenging due to their hybrid nature, which often results in infertility, especially in males. However, successful breeding has been reported under optimal conditions. Providing a spacious tank with suitable hiding spots and maintaining excellent water quality can encourage breeding behavior. It's important to note that even if spawning occurs, the viability of the offspring may be low.
Health Considerations:
Due to their genetic deformities, Blood Parrot Cichlids may be prone to certain health issues, including swim bladder disorders and difficulties in feeding. Ensuring a stress-free environment, maintaining high water quality, and providing a balanced diet can help mitigate these concerns.
Ethical Considerations:
The creation of Blood Parrot Cichlids has been a subject of ethical debate due to the intentional breeding of deformities that can affect the fish's quality of life. Prospective owners should be aware of these concerns and consider the implications of supporting such practices.
In summary, the Blood Parrot Cichlid is a unique and visually striking addition to freshwater aquariums. With proper care and attention to their specific needs, they can thrive and provide enjoyment for aquarists.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water. This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
