The Red Fin Borleyi (Copadichromis borleyi), also known as the Kadango Red Fin, is a captivating cichlid native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. This species is celebrated for its vibrant coloration and relatively peaceful temperament, making it a favored choice among aquarium enthusiasts.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Males typically reach 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm), while females are slightly smaller.

  • Coloration: Mature males display a striking combination of a blue head and fins with a red to orange body. Females and juveniles are generally silver to brown with orange to red fins, earning them the "Red Fin" common name.

Habitat and Distribution:

Copadichromis borleyi is widespread in Lake Malawi, inhabiting rocky shorelines and littoral zones with large rocks and boulders. The species thrives in warm, hard, and alkaline waters typical of the lake's environment.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended to accommodate their active nature.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 74–84°F (23–29°C)
    • pH: 7.4–8.4
    • Hardness: 12–15°N (214.29–267.86 ppm)
  • Diet: Omnivorous; a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, along with algae-based foods, ensures optimal health.

Behavior and Compatibility:

The Red Fin Borleyi is known for its mild aggression, especially during breeding periods. It is best kept with other Peacocks and Haps of similar size and temperament. Avoid housing them with Mbuna species, as they may exhibit more aggressive behaviors.

Breeding:

This species is a maternal mouthbrooder. Males establish territories and attract females by displaying their vibrant colors. After fertilization, females incubate the eggs in their mouths for about three weeks before releasing the free-swimming fry.

Incorporating the Red Fin Borleyi into your aquarium can add both beauty and dynamic behavior, enhancing the overall aesthetic and ecological balance of your aquatic environment.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
