The Red and Blue OB Peacock Cichlid is a selectively bred hybrid from the Aulonocara genus, commonly known as Peacock Cichlids. This variant is distinguished by its vibrant red and blue coloration combined with the "Orange Blotch" (OB) pattern. The OB pattern introduces irregular blotches of color, resulting from crossbreeding male Aulonocara species with OB-patterned female Mbuna cichlids. This intentional hybridization aims to enhance the fish's aesthetic appeal.

Origin:

  • Natural Habitat of Parent Species: The parent species of the OB Peacock Cichlid are native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. Lake Malawi is renowned for its diverse cichlid population, with each species adapted to specific ecological niches within the lake.

  • Hybridization: The OB Peacock Cichlid does not occur naturally in Lake Malawi. It is a product of selective breeding within the aquarium trade, combining traits from different cichlid species to achieve the desired coloration and pattern.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Males typically reach up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length, while females are slightly smaller.

  • Coloration: Males exhibit a vibrant mix of red and blue hues, enhanced by the OB pattern of irregular blotches. Females display more subdued coloration.

Behavior and Temperament:

  • Temperament: Relatively peaceful compared to other African cichlids but can exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods.

  • Compatibility: Best housed with similarly sized and tempered cichlids; avoid pairing with overly aggressive species.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons (208 liters) is recommended to accommodate their active nature and territorial tendencies.

  • Water Parameters: Maintain a pH between 7.5 and 8.5, with temperatures ranging from 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).

  • Environment: Provide a sandy substrate with ample rocks and caves to mimic their natural habitat and offer hiding spots.

Diet:

As omnivores, Red and Blue OB Peacock Cichlids thrive on a varied diet, including high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter. Regular dietary variety enhances their vibrant coloration and overall health.

Breeding:

These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. To encourage breeding, maintain optimal water conditions and provide secluded areas within the tank. Females carry fertilized eggs in their mouths until the fry are ready to swim freely.

The Red and Blue OB Peacock Cichlid's stunning appearance and engaging behavior make it a standout addition for cichlid enthusiasts seeking a vibrant and dynamic aquarium inhabitant.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
