The Dimidiochromis kiwinge, commonly known as the Kiwinge Cichlid, is a distinctive species endemic to Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe in East Africa. Renowned for its elongated body and unique coloration, this cichlid is a notable addition to the aquarium hobby.
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Males can attain lengths up to 13 inches (33 cm), while females are slightly smaller.
Coloration: Males exhibit a shimmering blue hue with potential red or yellow accents on the fins, whereas females are generally silver with subtle markings.
Natural Habitat:
In their native environment, Dimidiochromis kiwinge are typically found near rocky areas but also form offshore shoals. They are surface predators, primarily feeding on small fish such as utaka and Lake Malawi sardines. Hunting behaviors include operating in pairs or large groups.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Size: Due to their substantial size and active nature, a minimum tank length of 6 feet is recommended.
Water Parameters:
Diet: As omnivores, they thrive on a varied diet including high-quality pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter.
Behavior and Compatibility:
While Dimidiochromis kiwinge are predatory, they are not overly aggressive and can coexist with other large, non-aggressive cichlids. However, smaller fish may be at risk of predation.
Breeding:
These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. Males construct raised bowls in the substrate, known as leks, to attract females. Post-fertilization, females carry the eggs in their mouths until the fry are ready to be released.
Incorporating Dimidiochromis kiwinge into a well-maintained aquarium can offer aquarists a glimpse into the dynamic behaviors of Lake Malawi's predatory cichlids.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water. This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
Q: When can I expect my order to be ship?
