The OB Intermedius is a hybrid cichlid resulting from the crossbreeding of the Tramitichromis intermedius, a species native to Lake Malawi, with other cichlid species to introduce the "OB" (Orange Blotch) pattern. This selective breeding has produced a fish that combines the natural characteristics of the Tramitichromis intermedius with the distinctive blotched coloration typical of OB cichlids.

Natural Origin:

  • Tramitichromis intermedius: Endemic to Lake Malawi, this species inhabits shallow waters with sediment-rich sandy or muddy bottoms, where it sifts the substrate for food.

Hybrid Characteristics:

  • Appearance: The OB Intermedius displays a unique blend of colors and patterns, with a base coloration influenced by the Tramitichromis intermedius and overlaid with irregular blotches of varying hues, a result of the OB gene introduced through hybridization.
  • Size: Similar to its parent species, it can reach up to 6.4 inches (16 cm) in length.
  • Behavior: Generally peaceful, especially compared to other Malawi cichlids, making it suitable for mixed cichlid tanks. However, males may become mildly territorial during breeding periods.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Setup: Provide a spacious aquarium with a soft sand substrate to accommodate their natural sand-sifting behavior. Incorporate rocks and caves to offer hiding spots and establish territories.
  • Water Parameters: Maintain a pH between 7.5 and 8.5, with temperatures ranging from 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C), replicating the conditions of Lake Malawi.
  • Diet: Offer a varied diet consisting of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Including spirulina flakes or algae-based foods can provide additional nutrients.

Breeding:

  • Reproduction: As maternal mouthbrooders, females incubate fertilized eggs in their mouths until the fry are ready to swim freely, typically after 3-4 weeks. Providing flat rocks or secluded areas can encourage spawning behavior.

Compatibility:

  • Tank Mates: Compatible with other non-aggressive Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species to prevent stress and potential conflicts.

The OB Intermedius combines the serene nature of the Tramitichromis intermedius with the vibrant and unique coloration of OB cichlids, making it a captivating addition to any aquarium. Its peaceful temperament and distinctive appearance offer aquarists a unique glimpse into the diversity achievable through selective breeding within the cichlid family.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
