The OB Insignus Cichlid is a selectively bred hybrid, combining the distinctive "Orange Blotch" (OB) pattern with the characteristics of the Protomelas insignis, commonly known as the One-and-a-Half-Stripe Hap. This fusion results in a visually striking fish that has become a favorite among cichlid enthusiasts.
Origin and Hybridization:
Parent Species: The OB Insignus is a first-generation hybrid, typically resulting from crossbreeding a male Protomelas sp. Spilonotus Tanzania (a variant of Protomelas insignis) with a female Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara species).
Natural Habitat of Parent Species: Protomelas insignis is endemic to Lake Malawi, favoring rocky areas where it exhibits unique behaviors such as egg-eating.
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Males typically reach 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm) in length.
Coloration: Males display a vibrant blue and gold coloration, enhanced by the OB pattern, which introduces irregular blotches of varying hues. Females tend to have more subdued colors.
Behavior and Temperament:
Temperament: Mildly aggressive, especially during breeding periods.
Compatibility: Best housed with similarly sized and tempered cichlids, such as other Peacocks and Haps. It's advisable to avoid keeping them with Mbunas due to potential aggression.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons (208 liters) is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and territory establishment.
Water Parameters: Maintain a pH between 7.5 and 8.5, with temperatures ranging from 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
Environment: A sandy substrate complemented by rocks and caves will mimic their natural habitat and offer necessary hiding spots.
Diet:
As omnivores, OB Insignus Cichlids thrive on a varied diet. High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. Incorporating vegetable matter, such as spirulina-based flakes, can enhance their coloration and overall health.
Breeding:
These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. To encourage breeding, maintain optimal water conditions and provide secluded areas within the tank. Females carry fertilized eggs in their mouths until the fry are ready to swim freely.
The OB Insignus Cichlid's unique appearance and engaging behavior make it a standout addition for aquarists seeking a vibrant and dynamic aquarium inhabitant.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water. This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
Q: When can I expect my order to be ship?
