The King Kong Parrot Cichlid is a hybrid freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors and distinctive body shape. Unlike the standard Blood Parrot Cichlid, King Kong Parrots are larger, often reaching up to 12 inches in length, and possess fully functional mouths that can close completely.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: King Kong Parrot Cichlids typically grow to 8-9 inches, with some individuals reaching up to 12 inches in captivity with proper care.

  • Coloration: They exhibit a range of colors, including red, orange, yellow, and pink. As they mature, their coloration becomes more intense, making them a striking addition to any aquarium.

Behavior and Temperament:

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, King Kong Parrot Cichlids can coexist with other similarly sized fish. However, individual temperaments may vary, and some may exhibit semi-aggressive behavior, especially during breeding.

  • Social Structure: They can be kept alone or in groups and seem to do fine either way. Providing ample space and hiding spots can help reduce potential aggression.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended to accommodate their size and swimming needs. Larger tanks are preferable if housing multiple individuals or other species.

  • Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature between 72°F and 82°F (22°C-28°C), with a pH range of 7.8 to 8.5. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to keep the environment clean and stable.

  • Aquascaping: Provide a soft substrate, rocks, and plenty of hiding places such as caves among the rocks. They are shy at first but will become more active as they acclimate to their environment.

Diet:

King Kong Parrot Cichlids are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet. High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vegetables such as peas or spinach. This variety ensures they receive essential nutrients for optimal health and coloration.

Breeding:

Breeding King Kong Parrot Cichlids can be challenging due to their hybrid nature, which often results in infertility. However, successful breeding has been reported under optimal conditions. Providing a spacious tank with suitable hiding spots and maintaining excellent water quality can encourage breeding behavior. It's important to note that even if spawning occurs, the viability of the offspring may be low.

Lifespan:

With proper care, King Kong Parrot Cichlids can live up to 12 years, making them a long-term commitment for aquarists.

Availability:

King Kong Parrot Cichlids are widely available both online and in local fish stores. They are often bred in East Asian countries such as Thailand and may have traveled long distances before reaching retailers. It's advisable to inspect potential purchases for signs of stress or injury due to transportation.

In summary, the King Kong Parrot Cichlid is a captivating and hardy fish that can be a delightful addition to a well-maintained aquarium. Their unique appearance and engaging behavior make them a favorite among both novice and experienced fish keepers.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
