Green Terror (Andinoacara rivulatus)

The Green Terror Cichlid (Andinoacara rivulatus) is a strikingly beautiful freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors and bold personality. This South American cichlid is popular among aquarists due to its aggressive nature, making it a fascinating but challenging species to keep.

Origin and Natural Habitat

  • Native Region:
    • Found in South America, primarily in Ecuador and northern Peru.
    • Inhabits slow-moving rivers, lakes, and streams with sandy or muddy bottoms.
    • Prefers warm, slightly acidic to neutral waters with plenty of hiding spots.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size:

    • Males: Up to 12 inches (30 cm).
    • Females: Slightly smaller, around 8 inches (20 cm).
  • Coloration:

    • Iridescent green and blue body with orange or red edging on the fins.
    • Males develop a nuchal hump (forehead bump) as they mature.
    • Their vibrant colors become more intense during breeding.
  • Lifespan:

    • Can live up to 10 years with proper care.

Behavior and Temperament

  • Temperament:

    • Highly aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding.
    • Will attack smaller fish or those that invade their territory.
    • Can be more tolerant when raised with tank mates from a young age.
  • Social Behavior:

    • Best kept alone or with other large, aggressive cichlids.
    • Pairs form strong bonds but may fight if not compatible.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size:

    • 75+ gallons for a single adult.
    • 100+ gallons for a pair or community setup.
  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C).
    • pH: 6.5-8.0.
    • Water Hardness: Moderate.
  • Tank Setup:

    • Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel to mimic their natural habitat.
    • Hiding Places: Rocks, caves, and driftwood to provide territorial boundaries.
    • Plants: Hardy plants like Anubias and Java Fern (may be uprooted by digging).
    • Filtration: Strong filtration to handle their high waste production.
    • Lighting: Moderate to dim lighting preferred.

Diet and Feeding

  • Omnivorous Diet:

    • In the wild, they eat small fish, insects, crustaceans, and plant matter.
    • In captivity, they require a high-protein diet.
  • Recommended Foods:

    • High-quality cichlid pellets (staple diet).
    • Live or frozen foods: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, mealworms, and small fish.
    • Vegetables: Peas, spinach, zucchini, or spirulina-based flakes.
    • Avoid: Fatty meats (like beef heart) and low-nutrient foods.

Breeding

  • Pair Formation:

    • Pairs form strong bonds but may become aggressive toward each other.
    • Best to let them choose their own mate rather than forcing a pair.
  • Spawning Behavior:

    • They are substrate spawners, meaning they lay eggs on a flat surface (rock or cave).
    • The female lays up to 300-600 eggs, and both parents guard the eggs aggressively.
    • Eggs hatch in 2-4 days, and fry are free-swimming within a week.
  • Parenting:

    • Both parents protect and care for the fry, making them excellent parents.
    • If aggression increases, the male may need to be separated.

Tank Mates

  • Compatible Tank Mates (for Large Tanks):

    • Other large, aggressive cichlids like Oscar Fish, Jack Dempsey, or Red Devil Cichlid.
    • Large catfish like Plecos or Bichirs.
    • Some fast-moving fish like Silver Dollars.
  • Avoid:

    • Small or passive fish (e.g., Tetras, Guppies, or Angelfish) — they will get eaten or bullied.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
