Physical Characteristics

  • Adults can grow up to 12–14 inches, making them one of the larger cichlid species.
  • Display a prominent nuchal hump on the males, adding to their commanding appearance.
  • Their deep blue coloration becomes more vivid as they mature, making them a prized addition to aquariums.

Behavior

  • Despite their size, they are relatively peaceful cichlids, thriving in social groups of 6 or more.
  • Exhibits fascinating group dynamics, with a dominant male leading the group.
  • Slow-moving and graceful, they add a calming presence to aquariums.

Care in Captivity

  • Requires a large aquarium (100+ gallons) to provide ample swimming space and to mimic their natural environment.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
