The Wild Blue Zaire Moba Frontosa (Cyphotilapia gibberosa), often referred to as the "Zaire Blue," is a highly sought-after cichlid endemic to the deep waters of Lake Tanganyika in Africa. Renowned for its vibrant blue coloration and distinctive banding, this species is a prized addition to the aquariums of cichlid enthusiasts.Splashy Fin+4YouTube+4Aqua Imports+4

Origin and Habitat:

The Zaire Blue Frontosa inhabits the rocky, deep-water regions of Lake Tanganyika, particularly around the Moba area in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These fish are typically found at depths where light penetration is minimal, contributing to their unique coloration. Collecting them from such depths requires careful techniques to prevent barotrauma due to pressure changes.Aquatic Community

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Adult specimens can reach up to 35 centimeters (approximately 14 inches) in length, making them one of the larger cichlid species.Aquarium Central

  • Coloration: The Zaire Blue variant is distinguished by its intense blue hues, especially around the head and fins, contrasted by bold black vertical bars along the body. This striking appearance sets it apart from other Frontosa variants.Splashy Fin+1Moba Frontosa+1

Behavior and Temperament:

Generally peaceful, the Zaire Blue Frontosa exhibits a calm demeanor, making it suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species. However, they can display territorial behavior during breeding periods. Due to their predatory nature, caution should be exercised when housing them with significantly smaller fish.Aqua Imports+6Aquatic Community+6Tropical Fish Site+6Aquarium Central

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 500 liters (approximately 132 gallons) is recommended to accommodate their size and swimming needs.Aquarium Central

  • Water Parameters: Maintain a pH between 7.8 and 9.0, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F). Consistent water quality with moderate flow is essential.Aquarium Central

  • Diet: Primarily carnivorous, their diet should include high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as shrimp, fish meat, and crayfish. A varied, protein-rich diet supports their health and coloration.Aquatic Community

Breeding:

The Zaire Blue Frontosa is a mouthbrooder, with females carrying fertilized eggs in their mouths until the fry are ready to be released. Breeding in captivity can be challenging due to their slow maturation and specific environmental requirements. Providing ample hiding spaces and maintaining stable water conditions can encourage spawning behavior.Aquarium Central+5Aquatic Community+5Tropical Fish Site+5Aquarium Central

Acquisition and Availability:

Due to the complexities involved in their collection and the political instability of their native region, Wild Blue Zaire Moba Frontosas are relatively rare and often come at a premium price. Prospective owners should seek reputable suppliers who source responsibly to ensure the health and sustainability of the species.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water.  This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
