The Fire Eel (Mastacembelus erythrotaenia) is a distinctive freshwater species native to Southeast Asia, including countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Despite its eel-like appearance, it belongs to the spiny eel family and is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts due to its unique look and intriguing behavior.
Physical Characteristics:
Size: In the wild, Fire Eels can grow up to 3.3 feet (about 1 meter). However, in captivity, they typically reach around 20 inches (50 cm).
Appearance: They have elongated, dark brown to gray bodies adorned with vibrant red or orange lateral stripes and spots, which become more pronounced with age. Their snouts are pointed, and they possess small eyes adapted for their nocturnal lifestyle.
Behavior and Temperament:
Activity: Fire Eels are primarily nocturnal, becoming more active during nighttime hours. They are known to burrow into the substrate, often leaving only their heads visible.
Temperament: Generally peaceful, they can coexist with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. However, due to their predatory nature, smaller fish may be at risk of being eaten.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Size: A spacious tank is crucial, preferably 75-100 gallons or more, as Fire Eels can grow up to 1 meter in length.
Substrate: A soft, sandy substrate is ideal to accommodate their burrowing behavior and prevent injuries.
Hiding Spots: Provide ample hiding spaces such as PVC pipes, caves, or densely planted areas to mimic their natural habitat and offer security.
Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature between 75-82°F (24-28°C), pH levels of 6.5-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water.
Filtration: Efficient filtration is essential to maintain water quality, as Fire Eels are sensitive to poor conditions.
Diet:
Fire Eels are carnivorous and prefer a diet of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, earthworms, small fish, and shrimp. They may also accept high-quality protein-rich pellets. Feeding should be done during the evening or night to align with their natural feeding times.
Compatibility:
Suitable tank mates include larger, peaceful fish species. Avoid housing them with small fish to prevent predation. It's also advisable to keep only one Fire Eel per tank due to potential territorial behavior.
Lifespan:
In captivity, Fire Eels can live up to 10 years with proper care, though in the wild, they may live up to 20 years.
Handling Precautions:
Exercise caution when handling Fire Eels, as they have sharp spines near their gills that can cause injury. Additionally, ensure the tank is securely covered, as they are known escape artists.
Providing a well-maintained environment that closely mimics their natural habitat will help ensure the health and longevity of your Fire Eel.

Q: I just completed my order, what's next?
A: Before shipment, we quarantine all fish for at least 24-48 hours. During this period, we closely monitor the fish to make sure they are healthy. We also do not feed them during this time in order to 'clean out' their digestive system and limit their ability to soil the water. This helps reduce the amount of waste in the bag and will keep the water clean.
Q: When can I expect my order to be ship?
